First responders for the City of Meridian Homeland Security Department, along with Meridian police officers, are in Clarke County this afternoon assisting with the gas explosion that occurred near Shubuta.

The 42-inch propane gas line apparently exploded earlier this afternoon, setting off a large fire. Two people reportedly were killed in the explosion. Meridian police officers are helping to vacate residents in a one-square mile radius around the site, located near Highway 18. Homeland Security first responders are assisting at the request of the Clarke County Emergency Management Agency.
