Atmos Energy Takes Steps to Reassure Meridian Customers

MERIDIAN, Miss. (July 21, 2006)—Atmos Energy Corporation says that it will take steps to reassure customers in Meridian that its natural gas distribution system is safe by stepping up safety patrols citywide.

During a safety patrol, Atmos crewmembers identify gas lines in a particular area. Then they walk along the lines with equipment that can detect the presence of natural gas.

“Atmos Energy already inspects its system on a regular basis,” said Robert Lesley, director of public affairs for Atmos in Mississippi. “We are going to ramp-up that effort because of expressed concerns in the community.”

The concern follows an explosion and fire at a home in north Meridian Tuesday night. Lesley said that, following standard industry procedure, Atmos subsequently removed the meter, riser, regulator and service line from the residence so that they can be examined. The company has also performed inspections and surveys in the neighborhood.

“We have sophisticated equipment that we have used to detect the presence of natural gas in the area around the home,” he said. “The results of these efforts show that this is an isolated event and that the area is safe.”

The following safety tips are for anyone who believes that they smell gas.

  • Leave the area immediately
  • Call Atmos Energy from a safe distance on our toll-free emergency number (800) 692-4694
  • Do not turn any lights on or off
  • Do not smoke or use a cell phone
  • Do not operate any vehicle or equipment that could cause sparks
  • Do not attempt to turn natural gas valves on or off
