ARBOR
DAY CELEBRATION
Since 1926, the State of Mississippi has declared the second
Friday in February as Arbor Day-- a state holiday set aside for the planting of
trees. National Arbor Day is observed
the last Friday in April and was first observed in Nebraska in 1872.
The Meridian Tree Commission invites the public to attend the City
of Meridian’s annual Arbor Day celebration this Friday, February 8, 2008
at Witherspoon Elementary School at 1516 12th Avenue. The ceremony begins at 10:00 A.M.
The program will feature an Arbor Day Proclamation by Councilwoman
Mary A.B. Perry, special entertainment by fifth grade students from Witherspoon
Elementary School, Girl Scout Troop #324 color guard, planting of the Arbor Day
tree, and a seedling tree giveaway.
Seedlings for this year’s tree giveaway will be distributed after
the ceremony and consist of Shumard Oak, Sawtooth Oak, Bald Cypress, Black Walnut, and Loblolly Pine.
Meridian has been recognized by the National Arbor Day Foundation
as a Tree City USA since 1990.
