In order to protect the health, safety and welfare of Meridian's residents and ensure quality of life, the Inspection Division enforces all adopted codes and ordinances relating to zoning, building codes, comprehensive clean community ordinance, flood, signs and addresses. With the adoption and enforcement of the 2006 International Codes (building, mechanical, plumbing and gas codes) and the 2011 National Electrical Code, the Inspection Division has been instrumental in the lowering of Meridian residents' insurance rates as set by the Mississippi State Rating Bureau. Numbers help tell the story of the inspectors' work. In fiscal year 2011 the staff made 13,990 inspections and issued 2,104 permits, including building permits with a total construction value of more than $26,859,862.97.

Building Official, Ricky Joe Shirley, serves as secretary of several boards and the appropriate inspectors attend as members. The boards are as follows:

  1. Electrical Examining Board
  2. Mechanical Examining Board
  3. Building Code Board of Adjustments and Appeals
  4. Housing Code Board of Adjustments and Appeals

The Inspection Division also has available a "Construction Guidelines" booklet free of charge which includes basic instructions on the permit process and required forms. Information can be obtained by calling (601) 485-1900. Office hours are Monday-Friday, 7:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., excluding state holidays. Our address is 723 23rd Avenue Meridian, MS.
