BONITA LAKES AWASH IN FALL FOLIAGE

For the first time ever this weekend, area residents can get a breathtaking view of the fall foliage at Bonita Lakes by driving around the new gravel trail that encircles the upper lake.  This opportunity will be available Friday through Sunday, November 23-25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day.

Ordinarily, the trail is not open to vehicles but, in order to give people a chance to see the brilliant coloration around the lake, the city has decided to open the trail to vehicles for one weekend only.

“The drive is a special treat,” said Meridian Mayor John Robert Smith.  “It’s especially nice to be able to offer this to the elderly, those with physical difficulties or families with small children—people who ordinarily would not have this wonderful opportunity.”

Residents who want to make the drive should enter the park off Highway 19 South, take the paved road up to the dam, turn right and cross the dam.  When they reach the boat launch area, auxiliary police officers will be on hand to direct them onto the gravel trail.  Speed will be limited to 5 mph on the trail and vehicles must be under the size of a one-ton truck.  The approximately 3.5-mile trip will take roughly 40 minutes to complete.  The end of the gravel trail merges with the paved road that will take the visitors right back to the top of the dam.

Hikers, joggers and cyclists will also be permitted on the trail during the vehicular hours; however, they may want to schedule their walks or runs earlier or later in the day for their own enjoyment.

The event is free to the public.
